The Walter Engel Festival of Young Performers is a series of four concerts featuring young classical musicians from northern New Jersey. This festival, known as "FYP", provides an opportunity for fine young musicians to share their music in a non-competitive environment. Soloists and ensembles, both instrumental and vocal, are invited to apply.
FYP was created in 1991 by Dorothy Neff to honor the now late Walter Engel, a composer and conductor from New Jersey, whose life’s work was centered upon music, art, and the encouragement of young musicians. Read more about his amazing life by clicking on the Walter Engel link.
Concert Dates: The dates for the 2017 Festival are April 1st and 2nd, with concerts at 1:30 and 4:30 p.m. on each day. Admission is free and open to the public.
Place: The concerts are held at the Unitarian Society of Ridgewood, 113 Cottage Place, Ridgewood, NJ 07450. Click on Contacts & Driving Directions for details on how to get there.
Performers: The performers at FYP are young pianists, singers, and instrumentalists, ranging from kindergarten age through senior year in high school. Many perform as soloists, but FYP is delighted to present small ensembles, as well. Musicians must complete the online Performance Application and submit the Parental Release / Teacher Approval form by their teachers. For more information, please click on Performance Application Guide.
Scholarships: FYP awards scholarships to festival performers who are in their senior year of high school and whose musical outreach activities set them apart from their peers. In recent years, awards have ranged from $1,000 to $1,500. High school seniors who wish to be considered for an award must submit a scholarship application as well as a performance application. Scholarship winners must perform at the festival. To read more about the requirements, please click on Scholarship Application Info.
Volunteers: A small army of volunteers is needed each year to perform the many tasks that keep the festival running smoothly. These include stagehands, photographers, videographers, reception organizers, and people who simply provide support to the performers by being available with information, water, tissues, band-aids, and words of encouragement. Please contact us if you are willing to help as an FYP volunteer.
